Personal safety series #3

(A)  Review on what rapist look for a potential victim through a rapist's eyes

1) Hairstyle

They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.

2) Clothing

They will look for women whose clothing are easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.

3) Awareness

They also look for women who are using their cell phones, searching through their purses or doing other things while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.

4) Location

The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is shopping centers’ parking lots, back street and public restrooms.

5) Things on hand

They would not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.

Please protect yourselves. Do not let yourself be the next target.

(B)  Besides, here are some other rape prevention methods adopted from other websites:

 WAYS TO PREVENT RAPE

1.      Do not simply accept the invitations of strangers or new friends. Be cautious or reject the offer of food and beverage from strangers or new friends, because it may contain drugs, narcotics or aphrodisiacs.

2.      If you travel by public transport, avoid boarding on public transport with few or no passengers. Try to sit beside female passengers.

3.      Take the lift which has many people, avoid taking the lift alone.

4.      Always park your car in a bright place. Make sure your car key is in your hand before heading to your car.

5.      Keep legal and advised types of sprays, pepper and chilli powder in your bag.

6.      When at home, play it safe by never letting strangers into your home. If it is a handyman, tell him you need to see a PHOTO ID and his truck. If you don't trust him,do not let him in. If he does not look you in the eyes, has a PHOTO ID, drives a truck with the company name on it, or wears a uniform, then it is suspicious. Do not let him into your home! Call the company while he waits outside.

7.      Tell your attacker you are pregnant. There is a possibility the attacker may feel sympathy or remorse and may stop the rape.

8.      Avoid going out at night. If you happen to be out at night, make sure it is a well-lit, crowded, main street and you are with at least one other person. Carry your cell phone in your hand and ready to make a call.

9.      If you are in a moving vehicle, do not be afraid to jump out. A broken arm is better than your life.

Women's Centre for Change (WCC)

Myth vs Reality

Women's Centre for Change (WCC) showed that there are many erroneous perceptions in the community about rape. These generally tend to minimize the gravity of the problem, provide society with a false sense of security, encourage victim-blaming and excuse the perpetrator. These existing perceptions allow perpetrators to get away with the crime and at the same time discourage victims from lodging reports or seeking help. It is necessary to dispel myths so that victims can be treated with respect and dignity when they seek the help they need. The following is a list of some common perceptions which provided by Women's Centre for Change (WCC)and  AWAM.

1.      Myth: Only young, pretty women are sexually assaulted.
Reality: The age of rape victims range from infancy to old age. Their appearance is seldom a consideration. Rapists choose to attack victims who seem most vulnerable. Opportunity is the most important factor determining when a rapist will rape.

2.      Myth: Girls who wear sexy clothes or flirt with men provoke rape.
Reality: Rape is not related to the way a girl dresses or the way she acts. This is a myth that excuses the rapist’s behavior by blaming the victim. Rapists choose their victims for their vulnerability and accessibility, without regard to physical appearance or behavior. Children, elderly women, and women who dress modestly or fully-clothed from head to toe (wearing head scarves) have been raped.

3.      Myth: Rape is an uncontrollable act of lust. Most rapes are spontaneous acts of passion where the assailant cannot control himself.
Reality: The vast majority of all rapes are planned. Rape is not about lust. Rape is a premeditated act of violence and not a spontaneous act of passion. Men can control their sexual impulses. The vast majority of rapists are motivated by power, anger and control, not sexual gratification.

4.      Myth: Most women are raped by strangers.
Reality: Based on the statistics of police, it shows us that only a small percentage of rapes are committed by strangers. It is estimated that in 80% of the cases, the woman knows the rapist. In those cases, the rapist is an acquaintance, friend, or even family member. A rapist can be anyone.

5.      Myth: Most rapes happen in dark alleys, deserted areas, and other dangerous places.
Reality: According to police statistics, 69% of rapes happened in homes and buildings. It showed that women are also at risk of being raped in other places.Women should be careful at night, on quiet streets, or in poorly lit areas.

6.      Myth: It is impossible for a husband to sexually assault his wife.
Reality: Regardless of the marital or social relationship, if a woman does not consent to sexual activity she is being sexually assaulted. Some countries have laws against rape in a marriage. Many women who suffer from domestic violence have experienced some form of sexual abuse within their marriage. In Malaysia, it is against the law for a man to hurt his wife sexually.

7.      Myth: No woman can be raped against her will. A person can prevent rape if she really wanted to.
Reality: Most rapes involve physical force and/or threats of force. Many victims do not fight back due to fear, shock, or the perception that fighting back will lead to greater harm. Because rape is a potentially life-threatening crime, whatever the rape victim does to survive the assault is an appropriate action.

8.      Myth : She didn't scream or fight back, so it wasn't rape
Reality: Women face the trauma of rape in many ways. Some freeze, and are too afraid to struggle. The perpetrator may threaten to kill her if she puts up a fight. In other situations women may be coerced into having sex. The bottom line is, if sex is forced without a woman’s consent, rape has occurred, regardless of how the woman re-acts during the crime itself.

9.      Myth : Kissing or hugging can lead to rape
Reality: Consent to kissing or foreplay is NOT consent to sex! You have the right to change your mind at any time. You have the right to say no, even if you’ve had sex with that person before.

Personal safety series #1

In recent months, the word “rape” has been appearing in the newspapers, Facebook and many webpages which means rape cases rate has been rising very swiftly. Rape cases occur not only in our country, even at every corner of the world. Revealed that from January 2012 to July, the number of rape cases reported to the police was 859 (109 involving children under the age of 12 and 750 cases, involving 13 to 15-year-old victim), according to the Polis Diraja Malaysia headquarters in Bukit Aman. They also stressed that in fact, there are more than that amount because some victims were not willing to lodge reports to the police. “Rape” has been a hot topic among the people.

In early October 2012, a girl was gang raped by 10 foreign workers in Selangor. She was waiting for  bus to go to her workplace at Puchong Perdana at 3pm. Unexpectedly, two men arrived with a car, one of them with a knife and threatened the victim. The victim, who was terrified and unable to fight back, was brought to a flat in the area. In the flat, there were eight more men waiting. The men then tied up her hands and feet, and when she could no longer struggle, the men then took turns raping her. The victim pointed out that the rapists also recorded the gang-rape process and threatened to kill her if she reported to the police. The victim was eventually released at 7pm. In her worn state, she managed to contact her friend, whom upon picking her up, promptly rushed her to the Puchong police station to lodge a report.

On 31st December 2012, a 13-year-old boy attempted to rape a female graduate student in a petrol station The victim shouted for help, alerted the public to work together to catch the small rapist. Ultimately, she chose to report, and "face book" detailing the process and the suspect's appearance, identity and address. The victim revealed that this case took place in Malacca Vinci Abdullah Road Shell petrol station female toilets.

Of course, never miss out the world latest news - The Indian gang rape murder. On 16th December 2012, a female physiotherapy intern was beaten and gang raped in Delhi. After watching a film in South Delhi in the early evening, she and a male companion boarded a bus, which was being driven as an unauthorized "joyride", thinking it was a public bus. The only other passengers on the bus were five men who were friends of the driver. All six, including the driver, were charged in connection with the assaults and have been arrested. She died thirteen days later while undergoing emergency treatment in Singapore for brain and gastrointestinal damage from the assault.

In the following series, we will be revealing more information on rape cases, such as how a raper chooses his victim, the myths about rape, the precaution steps, and some advices from NGOs.
